Our curriculum is an “Emergent Curriculum”. It is planned around the children’s interest, abilities, and individual needs. Our environment and planned activities encourages and enhances the physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development of the child as a whole. Most of our activities are done in small groups in order to focus on the child’s individual needs. The whole staff is responsible for the curriculum; either in small or whole group activities. Many of the planned activities cover more than one area of development. For example, learning shapes and colors happens as we paint, cook, sing, and read stories.
The schedule in the Koala Room provides the structure of the day and allows for predictability and routine for the children. Large segments of time are spent in play and exploration. We follow the philosophy of Piaget. We believe children learn best through play, and we learn more about the children by observing their play. The teachers are engaged with the children and provide the tools they need to extend their play. We encourage the children to pursue their interests and try something new. In our study of the world around us, we will explore the Caltech campus, the park, fire station, and the neighborhood in weekly walks. We also schedule a special monthly activity, such as a trip to the library or a musical guest. Please be assured that every precaution will be taken to assure the safety and well-being of each child during these excursions away from the Center.
